I am thinking of attending a conference at the end of February at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort. Is there good road riding from the area of the hotel?

That part of town is flat as a pancake, with wide-open roads. A lot of people do a loop that passes the entrance to the resort, usually called "Around the Mountain" because it is 45-50 miles around South Mountain, on mostly flat roads. In case you want to see on a map: Just head south on Maricopa Road from the hotel; right on Queen Creek (Maricopa ends); right on Riggs; 17 miles to a right on Dobbins; left on 24th Street; right on Baseline; right on 48th Street; left on Chandler; right on 56th St.; south to resort entrance. If you want to add some climbing, there is an 8 mile climb if you make a right on Central when on Dobbins - making the total about 66 miles.

Other than that loop, you could ride anywhere on the flat roads around there, but it might get kind of boring. There is a large group that does the loop on Sunday mornings and will pass by the resort entrance around 8:15-8:30 am. There is also good riding just north, in Ahwatukee - just ride north from the resort & head west on Chandler Blvd. There is at least one group that does a ride there on Saturday mornings, and there are lots of groups throughout Phoenix if you are willing to drive to ride.

I prefer Landis Cyclery www.landiscyclery.com
They have a location about 15 minutes from your hotel, and a good selection of road stuff, etc. Someone there should be able to give you details on rides, etc. If you race, you might check out www.azcycling.com to see if one of the local races fits in your schedule........
