|Does anyone use this activity as a means of cross-training? Any comments on what muscle groups come into play?
I especially want to hear from those who tried it and thought it "sucked" and why. Thanks!

|The only thing I don't like about it is my lousy skating technique! I think it's excellent cross training for cycling, as it uses many of the same muscles, is highly aerobic, and is different enough to give you a mental break from riding.|

I would guess those who tried it and:
b) had foot pain, or
c) found it too strenuous due to poor technique
would all say it sucked. That's my guess.

It's a great form of crosstraining but it does take up the better part of one full lane. In Central Park, many cyclists see that as a land grab by inliners.
Just ignorance, is all. But something to be aware of.

|It would only suck if you didn't know how to skate. Kind of like using swimming as a cross-training sport if you couldn't swim. Or running if you had no feet.
If you know how to skate and are pretty good at it, it's the best cross-training for cycling that there is outside of maybe cross-country skiing. Skating uses the same mid and lower body muscles, but not the arms and shoulders that skiing does.
The good thing about inline skating is that if your stride is good it won't matter to your training if you use 4 or 5 wheel skates. It will only affect your speed, not the workout. 5 wheels are faster, but less manueverable. I skate in old hockey skates which are pretty slow as the wheelbase is very tight, but the turn exceptionally well. I only skate on my speed skates (5 wheel Bonts) if I will be on a long straight road.

|It's fantastic for cross training. Potential downsides: very hard on the lower back (if you lean over) until your back gets used to it; cracks going in the direction you are traveling are very dangerous if your wheels gets caught in them; skates can really slide out from under you with the slightest bit of gravel or sand; and very dangerous to draft because it takes a longer time to initiate braking than on a bike. Plus it's fun to track down a bicyclists -- they hate being passed by skaters.|| |
