I was doing my usual Ballona Creek ride today. (I have some pics I'll post when I get around to it.) I was feeling really good and was having a great time. On the way back, I overtake a guy riding the Giant Once bike. (I'm not sure of the name but it's compact carbon fiber.) He looks like a serious cyclist and as I pull up alongside, I tell him it's a nice looking bike. He pulls in behind me and we continue along the path.

I'm expecting that at any moment he's going to blast by me. That's usually the story of my rides. But no, this time I'm hanging on in front. I stay in front, keep my speed up on the little ups and downs and I'm thinking I'm doing terrific so far this year.

To make a long story short, when we slow down a bit we start to talk and he tells me it's his first day on the bike in over a month. He was laid up with the flu and is still feeling lousy. So it turns out I'm attacking and proud to be holding off a guy who's just gotten out of bed. Sigh.

Happy new year.
