Pain on the Outside of Foot--Again?!(5 posts)

Pain on the Outside of Foot--Again?!hawker12

I've been through three types of pedals and three types of shoes. Shimano, Carnac and now Sidi Genius w/Speedplays.
The problem is a little better with this combination but still I have tingling and then pain along the outside of my left foot. I've played with fore and aft and lateral cleat adjustment to no avail, as well as toe-in and toe-out. If I try to pedal with all my weight to the inside of my foot-as in a straight line down through my big toe, it helps somewhat but I can't really ride that way for long. I didn't used to have this problem but since getting back into riding about 18mos ago it has appeared.
Thanks guys.

They cant your foot, in your case to the inside, and change the pressure points. I use them on my right foot for the same problem you have. Just be careful and only use as much of a wedge as is minimally necessary to correct the problem. You don't want to create a new problem, like knee problems, while correcting your foot problem. You can also go to a hobby shop and buy some plastic wedges used to put behind model airplane motors. You will need to drill some holes for your cleat screws but they're cheaper and do the job.

I'm not familar with Sidi shoes. If it has three straps, try keeping the middle strap very loose.

When you walk are you pigeon-toed or duck-footed? My right foots tends to point outward and it causes pain on the outside of my foot unless my middle strap is very loose.

FYI, I'm using Nike Poggios and LOOK pedals.

I have the exact same issue. In looking closely at my feet on the trainer, I noticed two things: first, I tend to point outward on the side that hurts (the right) and I also tend to favor my right leg over my left for power. I turned my cleet (SPD-SL) to point outward and turn my toe inward. I also have float available on the cleat so I make an effort to move and stretch my foot as I ride. Still, even with that, I get sore after more than an hour on the bike.

I had the exact same problem. I got the LeWedges and there're great. It may be worth it to take the shoes and wedges to your podiatrist. He will tell you how much cant you need.
