Carbon Fiber handlebar slipping......help!!!(7 posts)

Carbon Fiber handlebar slipping......help!!!LowCel

I just finished my first ride with my Kestrel EMS Pro SL handlebar and I could not get the thing to quit slipping. I have tightened my stem as much as it will tighten and it still slips. I have the 26.0 mm bar and I am using the factory Giant aluminum/carbon stem. I really like this stem so I do not want to replace it if I don't have to. The aluminum bar that I had before never slipped.

Does anyone have any tips to get this thing to stay in place?

A lot of people i know put a piece of fine grit sandpaper between the bar and stem with the "rough" side facing the bar

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
Would 600 grit be fine enough? (nm)LowCel

I have the same bars, and had the same problem at first. I used a thin layer of black electrical tape, wound around the bars at the stem clamp, to stop the slipping.

I doubt that any possible adhesive properties of the non-sticky side of the tape had anything to do with the solution - I think that the tape just took up a little extra space between the bar and stem to stop the slippage. I did this back in June and have been slip-free since.

Thanks, I e-mailed Kestrel about it and they told me that the only thing that could cause that would be if it was damaged during installation and is not perfectly round now. BS

I had one that slipped. It turned out to be cracked at the stem clamp. Had to trash it. No more carbon bars for me.
