picked up a nike thermal jacket tonight. the other option i was considering was the descente element jacket. the nike jacket seemed warmer, and better ventilated, though the descente seemed to be more water-resistant than the nike. obviously base-layering and putting a shell can keep your dry(er) if ya gotta ride in the rain.

the thing that was most striking about the nike jacket, was the cuffs on the inside of the sleeves. you can later them over gloves, and still have sealant from the environment. the arm length is perfect, and it fits like a thick long-sleeve jersey. it's a slim or "pro" cut, though i bought a small and i usually wear a medium. it comes in three colors: red, blue, and grey. the blue was hideous, and the grey might work better with someone else's team kit. if you just wear black tights the grey probably looks best, as well.

so i left the shop, put my woolie and vest in my bag, and headed back home. the temperature was 38 or 39, and with a long sleeve jersey underneath my new jacket on underneath i was almost too warm. the only cold part was my legs, with c-dale klondike leg warmers and bib shorts. arm-warmers and a short-sleeve jersey might be a better option, as it leaves more options.

so far i'm really impressed. a further review will come tommorow after 70-80 miles. projected temperature at the start of the ride is a dry 32, warming up to 39 as a high.

Got one too, it really is a warm jacket. It rarely goes below 40* here so I usually wear it over a short sleeve jersey with an undershirt and I am never cold.

As an aside, I just picked up a base layer made by nike called body armor. I've worn it once (to x-c ski at 1 degree F) and it was nice and warm. I'm a little suspicious that it doesn't whick sweat as well as other base layer stuff that I have. I'll report back with more info later.

the jacket worked great on saturday. it was actually in the mid 20's at the start of the ride. long sleeve jersey underneath may have been too much, actually. after about 3 hours i had to unzip at one point when we were riding tempo. awesome jacket.
