|Oh the dark mistresses I serve.
Dr. Pepper and the ever so sugary southern sweet tea.
It must stop, I can no longer live with those dull aches that call me back!! Never again!
(See, I think I had too much today).
Any takers? It will be long weekend and I have an aspirin or two at the ready. Then comes Monday morning. It will be tough but I am going to do it.
Will my cycling suffer without those added stimulants?

|Us old guys can't take Coke in the evening, so I restrict my intake to the breaks on longer rides. I love a Coke with pizza or a sub sandwich, but then I have trouble getting to sleep. You folks who take in a lot of caffiene can't appreciate the jolt it provides to those who don't consume it otherwise.|

|Mtn Dew is the bane of my existence as far as caloric intake goes. As long as I can keep coffee, water, accelerade, and beer ... Im good to go.
Bizarre, I was just stating how often my life corresponds to a seinfeld episode.... are you the "master" of your beverages?

|I cut out coke and switched to DIET coke and now can't stand the taste of regular coke and I lost about 20 lbs.! You can do it, go diet and you'll never go back. I was also addicted to Little Debbies! Everyday on my home commute, a Little Debbe and a coke. Not any more though!|

|zebra cakes are my true weakness. As for eliminating the diet coke...no way. I have proven scientifically that having diet coke instead of blood in your veins makes you a faster rider.|

|... I already don't drink them.
Water, water with maybe 20% fruit juice if I want some taste, green tea, and herbal teas are mostly what I drink.

|Seriously, I am. Last year it was booze and coffee. I don't drink coffee now - maybe a cup once a month at most and can of Coke once in a blue moon.
But this year it will be booze and cookies and do-nuts. No more trans fats for me, no sir.
Try giving up soft drinks for lent. You'll taste the difference.

Dec 12, 2003 3:18 PM
|I've never been a soda drinker. Was raised on diet coke, so that is my soda of choice when there's no other reasonable options (McDonalds, etc). For the most part, it's all water, coffee, beer, and wine. Occasional carbonated mineral water if I'm driving... I don't even do Gatorade or anything.
I just don't like sweet drinks at all.

|I will occasionally, very occasionally have a can of Canada Dry, but that is it. I stick to water, during the summer probably over a gallon day with ease then plus anything while riding. However, I seem to drink far too much coffee and giving that up could be difficult.
As for giving up cookies, donuts, etc. Don't have them either. I would be more likely to have a chocolate bar, maybe twice a week on a good week otherwise far less.
Hmm, I'm starting to understand why I weight so little :)

|I don't drink much soda as it is, so don't count on me!
I tend to use it as an after the ride drink. Think about it: real soda has about 8tbs of sugar per 12oz. What's our body need right after exercise? Simple sugars. Keeps that engine from running empty...
Granted, if you ride less than 90min at a stretch, you don't need it. If you don't ride daily, you probably don't need it. I usually do both: ride 90min + and ride almost daily (Mon is my day off. Gotta love SoCal!)
Caffeine has been proven to be an ergogenic aide. You wanna be a better rider AND cut out soda? Drink black coffee. No calories to speak of, lotsa caffeine. Stay away from the evil Dr. Starbucks! Those mochas have boatloads of fat/etc. in them.
|Nope. Must have Diet Coke. (nm)||djg|

|you'll feel rough at first, but after that first week, you will feel much better. try and cut out all processed sugars next. your body will have to attack fat for fuel after you take away the sugar. you'll lose weight. my coach started me on this diet a month ago. the results are uncanny.
I haven't drank sodas on a regular basis for a few years now, but the cutting out of all processed sugars was tough. YOU CAN DOOOO IT!

|The Jones Soda Co. did a special run of a turkey-and-gravy soda in November (I kid you not--my soda pimp verified the story that appeared on the news one night). They only did 10 cases, which sold out in a few hours on the internet. The owner of the company said it was so awful, he couldn't finish the bottle.
Next time you get the urge to pop the top of that Coke or 'Dew, just let this nightmare run across the tastebuds of your mind...

|Well, I don't drink coffee but I need my fix and it comes in the form of 32oz Diet Pepsi in a styrofaom cup. No cans, no bottles, 1/2 ice in the rigth cup.

|I eat at the cafeteria at work, and have a piece of pie (pecan, lemon, pumpkin, apple) every day, sometimes twice a day! I'm cutting it out as of today - gotta lose 25 lbs before next March, and the processed sugars are first on the list. I think I'm gonna die!!!!|

|I gave up pop (yes I'm from the Midwest) nearly 20 yrs ago and now I cant' stand it, or any other sweet beverage. I put down ~ 16oz of coffee and tea daily, and a 6 pack of beer every 2-3 weeks
My diet affliction is ice cream. I have at least one serving every day. I can't resist Breyer's mint chocolate chip, Klondikes, Klondike big bears, those drumstick things, butter pecan, strawberry, chocolate almond.
I suppose I could drop 5-10 if I cut back, but I know I never will.

Dec 13, 2003 3:29 PM
|I OCCASSIONALLY drink a diet Pepsi or Coke or maybe a diet Sprite or something similar. I never drink regular soda. I'd cut out the diet ones too if I could drink beer with my pizza and/or sub, but there are times when an alchohalic beverage isn't a good idea, and water SUCKS with the aforementioned items, so a diet soda hits the spot.|
