Ullrich wants three more Tour triumphskevinacohn

BERLIN, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich has said his goal is to win the world's greatest cycle race three more times.

"I know how many years I have left to go for Tour victory and that's three," said Ullrich, who staged a remarkable comeback from a frustrating spell featuring a knee injury and a doping ban to take second place behind American Lance Armstrong in this year's race.

"I am convinced that my time is coming," the 30-year-old German told Saturday's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "I have three more chances to win the Tour and I certainly don't want to waste them. I want to take them all."

Ullrich became the only German to win the Tour in 1997 and is still regarded as the rider most capable of challenging five-times winner Armstrong's supremacy.

The German, who rode for Bianchi this season, will compete next year for T-Mobile, the former Team Telekom stable, which will be named after its new main sponsor, one of the German telecommunications giant's units.

Ullrich, who competed for Team Telekom from 1995 to 2002, will rely on a strong team also featuring Kazakh Alexander Vinokourov, who came third on this year's Tour, time-trial specialist Santiago Botero of Colombia and former Giro winner Paolo Savoldelli of Italy.

"We have one of the strongest teams in the world on paper," said Ullrich. "I decided to join T-Mobile because I knew that with them, I would have the best chances to win the Tour again.

"Inside of me I know that I can still do it. I feel that there's enough power left in my body. It was very close this year. I know I'll win the Tour again."

Personally, I don't think Ullrich has what it takes to win the tour three more times. In my mind, if he couldn't beat Armstrong this year, he won't beat him in 2004, when he'll undoubtably be more prepared, let alone win the Tour three more times...

Ullrich was the strongest man in the tour in two of his second places - in '96 he was being held back - in '98 he would have won the tour by 8 minutes if not for one horrible day. In the others he was second to Lance and the second strongest person and this year If he had stayed as close to Lance on Alpe D'Huez as he did on Luz Ardiden, he would have won the tour. He has what it takes to win physically. Whether he can mentally prepare in a way that will let him compete with Lance & avoid the distractions/crashes/injuries during the offseason is another question.
I think he has a shot at it...OffTheBack

... however, talking about winning the next *three* tours may be new record for trash talk. With that said, I think Ullrich discovered a whole new level of maturity & dedication after the horrible 2002 season, and those were always his Achilles' heels. His physical talent is beyond question. On a team that includes Vino, Evans, Salvoldelli, and Botero (assuming they're all healthy) it would seem dangerous to bet against him.

he said he thinks he has 3 more years in which he could win the tour, and that he will win it again, not that he we will win the next 3 tours.

Bianchi lost 43 seconds in the TTT. Only 2 teams that were faster were ONCE and USPS, both not really options for him to join. Plus he lost by 1.01, thats more than 43 seconds, genius.

But would that be cool or what?

I don't know if Jan has three tour victories in him but he is quite possibly the strongest in the world at this time.
To stay with Lance with a team half as strong and to slow after lance's fall and have Tyler and the peloton catch up
and still have a chance if not for the rain during the last tt speaks volumes. His team this year is the equal of USP
and it should be quite a tour.

Don't know if Jan can win three more but he proved last year that he was possible the strongest in the tour.
To have it come down to a rainy TT after getting very little from his team in the way of support and slowing after Lances fall is amazing.
His new team should be second to none and it will be a tour to remember.
