Short ride....winter wonderland. Ride ReportChuckUni

Woke up to a wet snow this morning....what else to do but ride? Choice: MTN bike or cross bike with fenders and rack? I decided on taking the Cross bike so I could bring the camera in the bags. I took off into the snow through Manayunk, Rocksborough, and Wissahickon park in Philly. It was only about 10miles, but had more than enough to see on a day like today.

First pic: Gorgas Lane...the unpaved trail part inside the park. Who needs a MTN bike anyway?

The Valley Green Inn. At this point it was about 8:40 in the morning and NO one was around.
I know that spot....biknben

MTB trailhead right behind the dumpsters on the left.

I remember that waterfall too.

A view from one of the old stone briges over the Wissahickon. So far I have only seen 2 or 3 people...and what a view. Glad I didn't work today.

On the way home now. The camera was wet and I was running out of things to dry it with. At this point I was seeing more people on the trails. The snow cuts down on sound from the noise outside the park, so it was almost silent.

Home. Now how do I get this mess in the house?

I put it in the basement to dry out. The tires look like they just came out of the mold now. Snow cleaned them to perfection. The 28c Conti Top Touring work ok in the snow, suprisingly. The only troubles I had was some spots where cars had made ice and when I was climbing Gorgas Lane. Gorgas is 12%+ and at first I was following a Buick struggling up the grade...spinning the tires, moving along at 2mph. I stopped and waited for him to make some headway, then went right up it. The extra weight from the bags only helps I suppose.

Anyways...That is all for now. Thanks for looking.

I ride that area from time to time. Amazing that it's smack in the middle of Philadelphia - could be in the middle of nowhere. I was stuck out in West Chester in my office. Not sure I'm tough enough to ride in unplowed sections of this mush in my advancing years. But your report may inspire me to try.

Nah, I'll have another hot chocolate and look at the pictures one more time :)

Wow, those pics were great. I ride there all the time and the best times are in the winter w/ some snow - it's awesome as your pictures showed. Unlike yourself, I did go to work today and the pics made my day not so bad - thanks again!

Well, I'm stuck here at work waiting for 5:00p to leave and go home and play w/ my dogs in the snow.

Have a good weekend,
Ed

Thanks...if you ever see a guy on a blue Raliegh 800 Mtn bike or bright orange Jamis cross bike in there it's probably me.

I'll keep an eye out for you...

PS. I'm the "moron" on the Trek 9.8, usually in a "bit of difficulty", as Paul Sherwin would say.

Do you happen to have higher resolution images of those? They are amazing, I'd love them for a wallpaper, if you do I can give you an email to save you hosting them.

Much appreciated

Sure. If anyone would like a larger version, let me know at ChuckU@speakeasy.net If you could tell me what size you need and if possible which ones or all of them that would be best.

Nice photos, but no thanks for the snow riding. Too old to go down so easily on such thin padding!
Thanks for the nice report fromJL

this neck of the woods. I ride down that way from time to time, too. I'm here in Exton looking at the snow and trying to find a bike like yours.

Great area and good for you for riding in this stuff. Just driving my daughter to the bus stop was an adventure.

I need me a 'cross or MTB to make this stuff "fun".

Thanks again.

John

No problem Greg....I have another set of ride photos from last month I might post up in a few. Contrasts nicely with this set, as it was taken Nov. 2nd when it was 80+degs and sunny.
