I have a Kurt Mfg trainer which DOES NOT wear out tires. My old Cyclops fluid leaked like crazy and wore tires out after about 60 hours of use.

I highly recommend the Kurt trainers if you haven't gotten one yet...
Ditto the Kurt Kinetic recommendationPMC

The Kurt trainers use a larger rear roller (2 1/8 inch) which seems to be easier on tires. Not to say you still don't get somewhat accelerated tire wear, it just doesn't tear them up nearly as quick.

Some trainers have rollers as small as 1.25 inches which will really eat a tire. One notable exception is the 1up USA which has a 3 inch alloy roller which should be real easy on the rubber although I have no first hand experience to back that up.

Don't toss the rear tires you've worn flat during the season, save them for the trainer. I've got a pile of semi useless tires just for this purpose.
