|Brakes rubbing on fork - what can I do?||BowWow|

|I hope you can see in the enclosed pix - my brake pads are rubbing on my fork. Is there anything I can do? I was thinking perhaps a spacer between the fork and the calipers... Would the bolt be long enough, or would I need to get a new one? Any thoughts?

|The worn area is smaller than the setscrew in the pad holder, but I'm concerned about fork integrity and brake performance. And it is rubbing on both fork legs...

|Never seen this fork in person. How does it ride? I've only ridden the Reynolds so I wonder how it compares.
Do you know who manufactures it?
Is that a Tuscany? Looks real nice.

|That fork is a step down from the Reynolds (at least in price). I like the fork a lot and matches well the bike (Siena 2003) because of the Litespeed logo and Ti mesh that the carbon seat stays also have. The mesh is only cosmetic but it looks real nice. I've never ridden the Reynolds but this fork will not disappoint. It's made for Litespeed somewhere in Asia.|

|The spacer is missing. Who built your bike? I'd be willing to bet the bolt was too short so the builder eliminated the spacer to make the bolt fit.|

|It certainly looks as though the spacer is missing. Get back to the LBS and purchase one, or demand that they fit one because they missed it off first time round. I'm all for saving weight on the bike, but missing off critical components like that is a bit much!|

|There is a problem with the build of bike. The brake is way to close. The brake was installed incorrectly. There should be lots of space between the fork and the brake.
Go back to the LBS that did the build. Demand that they fix the brake and replace the fork; nothing less. The fork is probably ok, but you cannot be sure with composites. But that is not the point, the point is that they screwed up and compromised the integrity of the fork. This is completely unacceptable.

|I would not ride this fork personally - it looks like the clear coat is scored pretty badly. If it is to the point where the carbon fibers are exposed, the laminate material can separate. Also, this is at the fork crown region, where the highest stress is located in the fork. Factor in that most forks are designed to be as light as possible, you could have a bad failure waiting to happen. Sure you might be ok riding it, but do you want to take that chance on a fast dowhill switchback?
Let me also say that I am a materials scientist who has looked at a good number of bike related failures.
