The cold weather has arrived in Yamaguchi! I broke out the long sleeve jersey and full length fleece bibs for my ride on Monday. The temperature dropped below 10C while we were above 500 metres elevation. My riding partner (from Britain) thought it was a nice warm day. Anyway, this was my first time on this ride route and I shot off a few photos for a report.

No, this wasn't a ride photo left over from a trip in Switzerland! I had to get the Japanese sign in this photo just to prove this photo was taken in Japan. It sure looks like alpine forests though!

The leaves are really starting to change colours now. The mix of evergreen and deciduous trees makes for a really good contrast.

A road less travelled! Yes, this is a two lane road. I stopped to take a photo of where we had been. There was a nice stretch of 15 to 19 percent grade climbing up into this high mountain valley.

The road leads out of the valley and further into the mountains. You can just see the road guard rails cutting through the trees.

Another narrow two lane road. I had a really good laugh about the white line painted on the left hand shoulder.

Not a bad ride up this road that went from 480 to 890 metres elevation in less than 5 km. There were a few short 10 to 15 percent grades, but not too bad.

There were quite a few nice views of little water falls. This will be a great ride for the summer; as there will be some great places to stop for a swim break!

The road got a bit rough near the top. This was the last pic of the ride; as I never stop on the decent to shoot photos. We had the most excellent long decent after topping out the ride at 1000 metres elevation. All total, 116 kms with 1562 metres of climbing, and an average of 24.8 km/hour. Yes, leisurely Monday ride!

If anyone wants to see photos of something besides the Japanese countryside, please let me know. I dont' shoot too many photos of developed Japan!

They are absolutely my favorite now on RBR (sorry MB1!). You live in such a beautiful part of the world. Please, please keep the pictures coming!

BTW, you must be one heck of a climber! :)

What a great area to ride, and I love those hills!

Pictures of some of your cute local females would be nice ;-)

Developed Japan would be OK too, we don't get to see it as much as you do.

Thanks and keep 'em coming!

...towards cyclists in Japan. Are the drivers respectful of you on the road or do you have any problems like some places here in the U.S.

If you're waiting to cross a street at a pedestrian crosswalk (on your bike), some cars will thank you for letting them go... biking is easy in Japan, driving is more difficult :-)

As you can see from my ride reports, I try to cycle on the small back roads. Unfortunately, I do have to cycle on some major highways from time to time. On the bright side, I have found the Japanese motorist to be very cycle friendly. I'm going to work on a ride report that highlights the cycling / motorist interface issues. I need to get a few more photos to support the report before I post. So, keep an eye out for my future cycling / motorist ride report!

Ride on!
