Thinking about a trip there Feb-Mar. I'm mainly interested in hiking & mtn biking but would also enjoy a good road ride if there's anywhere decent to do so. Anyone have suggestions about where to stay, groups to hook up with, etc.? Thx.

I went there in 97 for 3 months of surfing. Did not see any roads for a ride or such, in fact roads are terrible. I destroyed my Suzuki rental, panels were falling off from all the rough roads. Go mtb, I hear it rocks there. Hiking is great, canopy tour, river rafting, beaches excellent.

Try Arenal for river rafting and volcano. Try further north for hiking. Also check Volcan Paos. Tamarindo is a great little town on the beach with just an awesome view and hiking the beach should be great - turtles nesting and so on. If you really want to rough it go to Witches rock.

I went there this past year and only spent a week there, doing some serious day hikes and also kicking back on the beach. Beautiful country and can be really cheap (my GF and i decided to take the middle road rather than hostels or Marriots)

I spoke to a guy who runs a bike rental place (he was renting brand new trek 4500s) so i stopped in to see if he was hiring someone to run tours and/or a mechanic. He said he wasn't but gave me some info for his mtn. bike tour company. I still have it if you are interested, let me know.

I was there in 1992 for a couple months... I was in San Jose - stayed in the Hotel Los Angeles :D

It helps if you speak a little spanish - for directions, prices, etc. I rode around San Jose (if I remember roads are crappy in town but get better as you go out) and rode the Volcano Irazu once (long hard climb but worth it).
Deisel fumes are pretty thick too until you get out of town.

Never made it to the coasts though, I hear they're really beautiful.

It's really gorgeous country, the people are pretty nice towards cyclists and prices are probably still pretty cheap. I think I spent $20-$30 total food and lodging...

anyway - have fun

I had a rental, I parked at the airport to pick up my GF, I was in country for 3 months she was visiting for 10 days. While in the airport - my car was broken into (in a small gaurded, fenced in parking lot). My backpack was stolen with everything except I had kept my passport, money and tickets with me. I was left with the clothes on my back for 2 months, I was borrowing the GF's socks. Anyway besides the nightmare of the lost cameras, clothes and such, I still had an incredible time and would go back any day and highly recomend it.

Go to some of the more remote beaches and hang out in the small motels, I was paying $10 a day to live on the beach, eating for $4 - $6 per day and surfing my butt off. Actually got my picture in a sufer mag too.....

Watch out for a snake called the v lance.... very bad snake.

Enjoy.
