I hope to give an old bike to the Catholic Worker House again this year and I don't have any wheels with schraeder valves which are more useable in the inner city. Can I drill the presta valve holes and, if I can, what size should I make the new holes?
yes, you can...IDH2

drill them out. I've done that with a number of wheelsets...can't remember the diameter, but you will want to drill them out stepwise anyway...just take off a little at a time until the valve fits and make sure you get all the metal shavings out.

But why you believe that schraeder are more useable in the inner city? Just for curiosity.
New owners don't have pumps. They get air at gas stations. nmdzrider

my husband's ex had her rims drilled from presta to schraeder because she felt it was easier to use a schraeder pump and/or couldn't figure out the presta valve! : )
