I've been riding with leg warmers or tights but I wonder about the balms that are warming. Here's a link:

It basically helps to insulate your skin and keep the heat from escaping. On exposed skin, I'm able to ride without face protection in the cold temps; if I pull a neck-gaitor up to my upper lip, it keeps me comfortable down to the low 30's...worn under a pair of gloves, my hands stay moderately warm but not cold...I used to use a similar formula ("Freeze Guard"...composition looks identical) in my Bass fishing days down South during the winter...a liberal application and a cheap pair of $1 cotton gloves with the fingers cutoff at the knuckles kept me comfortable all day on the lake.
