MD-DC-VA commuters -- who rode to work today?ms
Nov 13, 2003 1:05 PM
Last night I was planning to ride to work today when my wife informed me that she had an early meeting and that I would have to drive my daughter to school (which is on the way to the office, so it makes no sense to go home to ride to work). I was bummed until I was awakened at 5:00 this morning by wind that sounded stronger than that which we had during Tropical Storm Isobel. The wind was so strong in Downtown Baltimore at lunch that it was hard to walk against the wind. Given that a substantial part of my ride home would have been directly into the wind, I now am glad that I did not ride today. How many people have to brave the wind this evening (especially those who live west of where they work)? Good luck.
I was going to ride this a.m. -- rollers started looking prettybill

After surviving the hurricane intact, we lost a tree from my backyard today.

cut down my usual 16mi commute to 2.5mi (no not b/c of wind, sick). Glad I didn't have to ride on public roads, MUTs only.

The morning commute wasn't bad at all. The wind hadn't really cranked up yet, though. With luck and the prevailing winds, I'll be blown in the direction of home this evening. My commute is about thirty miles round trip along the Mt. Vernon Trail between DC and Mt. Vernon.

~10am it was blowing pretty hard crossing 14st bridge. I haven't seen waves as big on Potomac even when we had Isabel.

With the way the wind is blowing, if you have a tailwind, you may set a speed record. Be careful and good luck.

I'm almost ashamed to admiit that as I left my office and was walking to the Metro, the only thought I had as the wind whipped and burned my face was "thank God I didn't ride today." Even die-hards have their limits.

I did. Only went airborne a couple of times.
Waited a day and still nearly got blown off the bridge.djg

Bit of a breeze on the 14th street bridge--almost hit the railing on a couple of gusts.

Otherwise a nice ride.

I cycled to work the last two windy days (the 13th and 14th). Given the windy conditions, I used a mountain bike (heavier wheels = greater stability in the wind OR at least I would like to think they do). My 2 day mileage total, by the end of today will be slightly more than 30 miles.

I wasn't in the mood to deal with it yesterday (13th). Got to bed late. It's wasn't much better today. I have a westerly commute in the morning. Wow, did that suck. Hopefully, the wind won't die down before the PM commute. I'm looking forward to the tailwind.
