I am heading out to LA for Thanksgiving and the week before. I cannot bring my bike; but, was wondering if you guys could suggest a shop that rents bikes. Also, is the riding in/near Sherman Oaks worth it?

Thanks for the replys and I have been there a few times and kind of know the area; but, have never thought of riding there,

Try Bicycle John's in Burbank, at the corner of Chandler Blvd. and Hollywood Way. It's a shop that is as high-end as it gets. I know they have groovy mountain bikes to rent. And they might have road bikes, too. By the way, all the local Sherman Oaks bicycle shops suck...though it hurts me to say it.

Bicycling in Sherman Oaks is an urban-residential experience, but there are some good rides. An easy, mellow ride is to ride along Valley Vista Blvd, a windy thoroughfare a bit south of Ventura Blvd. Climb Sepulveda Blvd southward and get onto Mulholland. Ride east for a longer ride. Ride west for a shorter, perhaps steeper ride.

Ventura Blvd itself is a very crowded street, but bicyclists are common on it, and drivers are usually mindful of your presence. It'll take you west to Topanga Canyon. From there (got your map handy?), you can make your way into the Santa Monica Mountains, where the biking is first rate.

Anyway, have fun.
