I posted a question on my bike shoppping; how to compare a bike with Reynolds 520DB steel to one with SG Aluminum (although I still do not know what 520DB and SG mean). These were the only two bikes in Houston bike shops in my price range.
It might seem easy to everyone else -- I got the suggestion "Test ride them"; but I never thought of it; and the bike shops never offered.
So I did, and I took my husbands fishing scale! That was my first surprise, the Mercier which was steel weighed 22.5 lbs (Mercier shop had quoted 22); BUT the Raleigh weighed 25lbs and the Raleigh shop had also quoted 22.
And I rode both bikes for about 15 minutes each; then it was easy, the Mercier was much smoother to ride and felt much better, and I bought it.
I know $395 is not a lot of bikes to the most people on this message board; but to me its a lot. I am glad I got good advise.
