|I'm thinking about putting together a bike for moderate touring with a BOB trailer, but I'm not sure of the pros/cons of bike set-up. Most loaded tour bikes come with center-pull canti's, but I have had only bad experience with this type of brake (mostly on cheep, old beaters). My MTB has linear-pull V-brakes which I love & have only ever touched them to replace pads. My question: is there any disadvantage to opting for v-brakes over traditional touring style center-pull canti's?

|both options are bad. Vs with MTB levers are second only to disk. With road levers, you have cantis or Vs with some kind of pulley system to give you the amount of cable pull necessary. It's what I use (Vs with a Travel Agent) but they are almost as bad as the cantis.

|Linear pull brakes with Travel Agents are near standard fare for tandems that have STI shifters. I'd avoid using the braided brake cables that Travel Agent recommends because they have too much stretch. Just inspect your cables regularly where they roll over and through the pulley and replace them if they start looking "hairy."
If you use barcons or down tube shifters, Dia-Compe actually markets a road bike lever (287-V) that has enough cable pull to handle linear pull brakes.
I HATE the Tcktro Mini-V's with standard road levers. You have to set the brakes so close to the rim that you can't release the brake to remove the wheel without adjusting in the barrel adjuster.
One of the things that I like most about linear pulls is how the brake shoes attach. Setting up a traditional canty brake that moves in three different directions can be a major pain. Some of the devices for providing the centerline cable stop necessary for canty's are pretty cheesy too.

|I'd thought of using the standard Shimano aero brake levers with a travel agent-type device, but the Dia-Comp 287 sounds like a better set-up.
Will these levers and v-brakes have enough stopping power & wet weather adaptability for touring with a BOB trailer?

|Pick up a CX disc brake compatible front fork and a Mavic road disc brake. Then you will stop wet or dry.

|I'm using the Dia-compe V levers with XTR V-brakes. I really don't like it. The lever are pretty expensive (>$50) and the return spring is weak. They feel like crap when riding on the hoods too.
I bought the levers since I already had the brakes when I did the build. If I were to do it over I would stick with regular brake levers and good canti brakes.

|use the cantis or the short arm v's with whatever road levers you already have. long arm v's won't work.|

|I have been using the mini-v's with dura-ace brake levers. Although the mini-v's seem to be cheaply made, I like the stopping power better than cantis. I have used my bike for loaded touring as well as road and off-road rides.
