|OK, I live in a small town in the southwest corner of Alberta, population about 3,000. Here's my commute...
Out the front door, down the steps, hang a quick left at the sidewalk. On a nice day I'll drop down the driveway onto the street. Oh, that's our "BMW" parked in the snow that's plowed semi-close to the curb... ;-P !!!
Today I'll head up the sidewalk - it's a bit smoother and a heck of a lot less icy than the street! Besides, I'm hangin' a left at the corner a half-block up the street...
I've rounded the corner and headed south on Third Street West. My FS MTB was a LOT better at this commute! I sure regret that sale now. Perched on top of a road bike riding through loose snow on top of very bumpy and icy snowpack gets pretty dicy! Oh, I'm heading straight through the intersection you can see up ahead...
Here's the intersection. Things always get interesting here. Ruts in the soft, with ruts under the soft. When its really busy in the summer I have to circle once, maybe twice at this intersection waiting for a break in the traffic. In these conditions I just stop and wait... Oh, the shiny part is glare ice - there is NO traction here - ya end up on yer back REAL quick!
Just across the intersection on your right - This is where I work! We're almost there!
The final climb on the trip: up the driveway. It's the steepest part of the ride, and trecherous when icy!
And into the "parkade." We're here!
Well, that's my daily commute. A half block west, a block and a half south, up the driveway about 50 yards and I'm there! Going home I don't even pedal once. A good pushoff and I'm home!
Sigh. I don't even get to shower when I get to work! :-(
I miss this ride maybe 10 days a year, all due to the weather. Last year I only missed three days!
