The '70's Never Happened: More Cycling Fashion VictimsGregory Taylor

Ah yes, those swingin' 70's...the time that fashion forgot.

Is it just me, or do all of these models look slightly insane? Especially the guy in the red jersey and helmet. He just isn't right.

The argyle socks on the guy on the right is a nice touch.

to not need to live with the ephemeral dictates of fashion that seem to presently enslave cycling and practically every other form of human endeavor as well. But this is coming from as guy who has never ridden anything but steel and won't buy an SUV.
But...argyle socks?Gregory Taylor

I hear ya'. I get most of my miles on bikes picked from the trash and troll the close-out table for my cycling gear. But...argyle socks?

Yes, 1979 was a fine year. Note the proto-mullet on the mannekin, and the lime green background. I can hear the Bee Gees playing faintly in the background...

We can't forget women's cycling, can we? A quick scan of the Peugeot catalogs suggests that, in the '70s, women cyclists were a bright, happy group who had most excellent hair and had mastered the art of riding a bike in a very short skirt. Okay, maybe the '70's were that bad if you were a guy.

That looks like Jim Kerr of Simple Minds on the left. Well, at least the ad is more creative than their music.
I bet their other jobs were as porn actors...nmrwbadley

He'd be like "OH Yeah!!, That brings back some memories! HA Ha", then he punches you in the face "Yeah, BAD memories!" One more kick to the ribs.
end scene.

Except that Hinault had no bad memories in the 70's.

I actually owned and wore clothing like those models are sporting. The "track suit" tops that the fetching lass on the tandem is wearing were all the rage. Lots of clothing in those days came with world championship stripes as trim on collar and sleeves. Hey, who knew -- maybe I was a former WC in 1972!

All evidence that I wore those same clothes have been destroyed. The best was the original helmets worn over long hair (especially hair long but not long enough for a pony tail).

Off course, 30 years from now, people will look at we are wearing and laugh just as hard. Let's see, I'll be 78, I hope I'm one of the one's laughing.

"What bit of current cycling fashion will we laugh at in 30 years?"

70's gear I remember was classic woolContinental
Nov 7, 2003 10:51 AM
Back wool shorts with real chamois and a soft white wool jersey with 1 side blue horizontal stripe acrss the front. leather palm gloves with cotton mesh back. No helmet. black leather shoes with lots of holes, a thick stiff leather sole with a cleat nailed onto it.
Where do I find clothes like that any more?LC

I want to dress like that for Halloween next year.
