I have been asked (Harassed into) to do a few mountain bike races next year. Trying to but more time in on the mountain bike I have found that I hate my current spds pedals! What is the best pedal for a roadie to use on a mountain bike? I want something that feels more connected then spds and that I can get a 3mm shim for. I have been told the time and the new spds are better but thought I might see what others thought.
MTB pedals are notoriously sloppy...biknben

Most models don't offer that "connected" feeling. It's a trade off of easy entry and exit. They have a lot of slop so that mud and debris doesn't interfere. Time pedals won't feel better in that regard. They may even be worse.

The newer SPDs may be the best bet.
