UK ride report: Memories of Summer - St Ives, CornwallUcannotBsirius

Back in June I went down to St Ives in Cornwall for a week with my wife and two daughters, plus my in-laws. St Ives is a beautiful place, we've been going down there for about 12 years now, at least once and often twice a year. It's just under 200 miles South West of Bristol where we live.

This year I took one of my road bikes down with me and got a good few rides in, mainly early morning so as i could do family stuff for the rest of the day.

This day I decided to leave by 6.00am and ride up the coast to Perranporth, another gorgeous place with a stunning beach (we stayed there for a weeek last month but I wasn't allowed to take a bike this time!!). I rode up and back, almost exactly 50 miles with lots of hills and lots of great views.

It's 5.45am and the sun is just rising. While the rest of the household sleeps The man Who Must Ride has a coffee and gets ready.

Climbing out of St Ives I looked back at the town in the early morning light.

About 10 miles up the coast now, having ridden around St Ives Bay.

One of the many steep climbs along this coastal road, this one leading North out of Portreath.

The beach at Porthtowan. It's about 7.30am now but I've only seen a few vehicles on the road. I wish it was always like that!

Looking down at the beach at St Agnes, the last village before Perranporth.

I decided to go down to the beach to take this pic – Look cleats and wet sand are not a good combination however!

Heading back now and St Ives Bay is in front of me with St Ives itself just to the right of centre. Getting hungry now!

I've looped back round the town and come into St Ives from the South side as the clouds start to roll in - I definitely chose the best time of day to ride. I've called ahead to my wife on my mobile phone and a large cooked breakfast awaits me, only about 5 minutes away. After 50 very hilly miles I'm looking forward to it!

...a tour I did in Wales a couple of years back. Lots and lots of coves along the shore with little villages in the bottom of most of them and 20% climbs to get out of each one. Beautiful and brutal at once.

Have you ridden the B3306 from St. Ives to St. Just?

I went out to Cornwall to stay with people from our local pub in London who have a house in Truro. We drove from St. Ives to Lands End on a bright day in February. The road had little traffic and the scenery was stunning. I imagine during the summer that motor coaches populate/clog the road but it's a ride I'd like to complete.

Boneman - yes I have, and carried on down to Lands End. It's a superb road, but as you say you really need to ride it when it's quiet, as I did by going out early. When I rode that way in June I caught up with a coach and drafted it for nearly 10 miles - at about 30mph on the flat. It dropped me on the climbs but I caught up easily on the descents and corners.

That area of North Cornwall has so much superb riding, as long as you stay well away from the dreaded A30.

Beautiful scenery and those hills look really tough. Nice ride report
Would that be THE St. Ives, as in...The Walrus

"...as I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives...", etc, etc?

Nice report, although it would be improved infinitely if the photos were correctly sized. (Ahem.)

Well there are three places named St Ives in Engand, I've always assumed this is the one referred to, though I don't know for sure.

Yeah, fair point about the picture sizing, did it in a bit of a rush and forgot to resize them.

I haven't cycled in or near Cornwall, but I have driven the roads there and I recall the cars going like bats out of hell and the roads being very narrow for cyclists. Am I wrong??
