San Jose/Santa Claria Rides?JetSpeed

I'll be out in San Jose CA this weekend and I'm staying
at the Marriott Santa Claria. I'm bringing my road bike
and was wondering if someone who lives out there can give me good directions from the hotel to a good 40-50 mile hard road ride? Thanks!!

It's Santa CLARA, not CLARIA. It's not a great spot to start a ride from traffic-wise, but you'll find Light Rail within a block or two from your door. You can take it up into Mountain View and do great rides on the Penninsula (Palo Alto, Woodside, etc.). Or you can take it to south San Jose and do this:

You could also brave a ride down Tasman into Sunnyvale. Tasman shouldn't be crowded on a weekend, plus I think there is a bike lane. In Sunnyvale you can find more bike-friendly roads that will take you to the hills. Page Bike Viking here--he might have some ideas.

As Mohair mentioned, you have a lot of city between you and good riding. The good riding is near or in the hills; you're near the bay.

Here's how you get to the hills. Ride south (toward the hills) on Great America Pkwy for 3 or so miles. Take a right (west) on Central Expressway and go 6 or 7 miles to Arastradero. Take a left on Arastradero and head into the hills. Some good roads are Page Mill, Alpine, Portola Valley, Old La Honda, Foothill, and Canada. A map would be helpful to keep from getting lost. Have fun.

Once you get to Arastradero/Foothill Blvd area you'll see hundreds of riders out. Might be fun to hook up with a group.

stay on great america( the name changes to kiely but the road is straight) untill homestead turn left on homestead it ends into foothill Blvd.
The better ride is the loop backwards. Foothill to sandhill etc.
Also you can ride the loop at Calaveras long erand about 2000 vertical feet, the Arastradero loop only has small hills.

Foothill expressway is the main bike artery in the southern pennesula and there are dozens of rides off of it. If you want to climb, take Foothill to Page Mill road, climb 8mi (2400'), make a right on Skyline go 10mi to highway 84. make another right and descend for a while then right on portola, left on Sandhill back to foothill.

The Spectrum ride leaves from the shopping center on Homestead and Hollenbeck in Sunnyvale at 9:00. Its a group ride that is usually between 60 and 100 riders at the start. It's a beautiful ride through the foothills up to crystal springs reservoir in San Mateo county. Its an "A" ride so if hard is what you want, hard is what you will get.
