new frame,acceptable condition?(12 posts)

new frame,acceptable condition?BenLomond

I ordered a new cyclo-x frame from my lbs, and I'm not sure if the condition as presented is acceptable for a brand new frame.
I went down to pick up the frame yesterday, and there was a paint chip about 1/4x1/4in right by the down tube shifter boss, the rear dropouts had marks that looked like a wheel had been mounted, and the rear derailer hanger looked like it had been mounted. The frame also has chipped paint around the face of the bottom bracket, and lots of grease smears all over the frame. The fork looked fine. Am I being to picky? I this normal for a new frame? What is facing and chasing a bottom bracket?
thanks for any help,
Clyde
by the way, its a lemond popradBenLomond

The .25" chip around the downtube boss isn't really acceptable. All of the others are. It's pretty unreasonable (IMHO) to expect that a frame will be not only brand new, but never have been built up before. It seems odd that you ordered it, and it came in this way - it sounds more like they disassembled one from the floor.

The paint around the BB, hanger, and dropouts are all expected to be marred. The one at the downtube boss could be a deal breaker for me.

If he was told by the LBS that the frame was new, he ordered a new frame and paid for a new frame and expected that that is what he was getting - why on earth would you say it is unreasonable to expect to receive a new, never built up frame??

I ordered a new frame recently - and I got a NEW frame, that's what I ordered and paid for.

If he ordered and paid for a new frame, as opposed to a used frame - he should expect a new frame.
Because "use" means something different, at least to meTJeanloz

If a bicycle is sitting on the showroom floor, never ridden (except for the test ride by the shop mechanic), is the frame "used"? Do the parts on a bike become "used" the moment they touch other parts? If a frame has been "prepped" (chased/faced etc.), is it suddenly "used" because the virgin paint has been scraped off?

Building a frame up doesn't render it "used."

I ordered the frame as they did not have any frames or complete bikes on hand. What is facing a bb?

Facing is the process of machining (by hand) the sides of the BB shell to ensure that they are parallel. This process always takes some paint off.

I would find it odd that a frame came new (from the factory presumably) in this condition.

the bottom bracket is not faced. The paint on the bb looks chipped and rough. Is this normal? I assumed that it would need to be faced aswell as chased as the treads look somewhat buggered.
Might be, might not be,TJeanloz

I would say that it is abnormal for paint around the bottom bracket to be perfect. But from your limited descriptions, and our varying tastes, it's impossible to say whether it's beyond normal or not.

Is the Poprad even available as a frame only? If not, then this is definitely normal for a bike that was built up by Trek and then disassembled by the dealer.
re: new frame,acceptable condition?yeah right

lemond has some crappy paint and quality control.

a friend of mine had his zurich break, and when i was helping him build up the replacement zurich frame (the night before a race btw) we'd built it all the way, until we found the cable boss by the rear derailure was welded on backwards. the paint had a huge sag in the down tube as well. pretty shoddy work.
Send it backMR_GRUMPY

If you just bought a frame/fork from them, without them doing any work on it, WHY was the box opened ??
It sounds like you bought a frame that has been built up and stripped down and has a ding in the downtube.
Send it back, unless you can get a discount. $$$$$
