Is there a big difference between training on a spinning bike and using a trainer?

Yep. Pretty significant. Different pros and cons. You can crank up the resistance a LOT more on a spinner bike than you will ever be able to with a trainer (well, you can get pretty good resistance on a mag trainer, but then you'd probably be trashing your tires!)

But no spinner can exactly replicate your position on your own bike, and that matters to some folks.

I own both, and I prefer the spinner because it doesn't put wear and tear on bike and tires.

I like mine, it's a break from the bike and it helped a great deal in turning me from a masher into a spinner (no pun intended.)

I have a Lemond Revmaster, it can be adjusted to any position. In addition you can use your own saddle, pedals, and a road handlebar.
