Giant TCR 1...Is this the one to buy?hawker12

I'm looking at a '03 Giant TCR 1, all Ultegra, carbon fork, but aluminum seat stays. It's been ridden a fair amount but in good shape. He's willing to sell the entire bike or just the frame. Any thoughts on what it's worth either way? Also, I really want a triple. Would I be better off buying it as frame only and building it or buying it complete and just replacing all the drive train? Budget is a bit of a concern. Thanks in advance.
entire frame is aluminum (nm)witcomb

Um,not sure what you mean? The frame is aluminum but the fork is carbon/composite.

you said the seat stays are aluminum, I just said the entire frame is aluminum. You can get bikes with carbon fibre seat stays and what not.

I have a TCR2 and I love it, it is a great bike and major bang for your buck. I only have a double, and I see no reason to have a triple. Most of the hills around are below 15% and there is no problems. I wouldn't let that be a factor to limit you from buying the bike. Once you get out you'll find it's all you need.

You will probably do better price wise buying the complete bike, but you won't know that until you get a price from the guy. If you have to build up a used frame you will certainly spend more unless you find some steal of a deal on a gruppo or are willing to accept less than Ultegra. Are you certain you need the triple? If so you can always change out the cranks at a future date.

After much research, I decided to buy a TCR-1...brown santa will deliver tomorrow. I work part time for my LBS friend, so got the employee price..!

How much is this guy asking for the bike?

Rode it yesterday. It's in nice shape, been raced one season but never dropped. Stock stem and bar replaced with high end Ritchey. Mavic Open Pro wheels. He's asking $1000 complete or $400 for the frame. I belive (forgot to ask) that includes the Speedplay pedals, which I like.

I'm 50 and the hills are a little tougher than they used to be..so yea, I think I really would like to add a triple. It would be an easy call if he were asking $800 but I'm not sure about $1,000...and with having to put money into it? By the way...my last aluminum bike was an '85 Cannondale, this was a MUCH better ride but still not as smooth as steel.

Thanks for your help. $1000 seem resonable to you guys?

I think you can either get a new TRC2 or OCR 1 with a Shimano 105 triple for your budget price of $1000.
