My STI cables curently overlap above my front tire before entering the frame cable stops. I am getting annoyed with the noise the cables make when slapping together on rough roads. Is there any detriment to shortening these to prevent the overlap? I notice a lot, if not all, pro bikes are set up with shorter cables with no overlap. Thanks for the advice.
You can shorten them, but there's a limitTJeanloz

Eventually, you'll cut them so short that you can't steer through the full range, which is not optimal. But, on most bikes, you can safely trim the housing to a point where it doesn't overlap.

Just make sure you can turn your bars to the left and right without yanking the cables from the stops. On some frames, depending on the tubing diameter and position of the stops, you can also cross the cables--ie send the right sifter cable to the left stop and the left shifter cable to the right stop, then have the cables cross each other under the downtube--this can make things a lot cleaner.
