|For next race season (2004), what are some of the bigger events to travel out of state for? Most likely over Memorial Day and/or Fourth of July weekend. I am in Michigan. If I remember, there was something big in Iowa. What other multi-day events are out there?|

|Your mention of Iowa brings RAGBRAI to mind, but the phrase "next race season" and RAGBRAI don't really belong together.

|There is a series of 4 races in the river towns in SE Iowa. They all have cash payouts for all categories. Good turn out from several surrounding states.
I rode the road race last year. The Pros, & Cat 1 & 2 start and finish in Burlington. Us mere mortals start in Wapalo and finish in Burlington just before the Pros finish.
It is a big field 120+ bikes and fast & flat. 3 major pileups in the race I was in, the ambulance drivers kept busy. I got caught up behind the second big pile up and endup in the ditch but did not wreck. No way to catch back up to the peleton that was moving at 28-31 MPH. The finish was a long downhill finish. The pro winner from 7up last year was clocked at 55 MPH at the finish line.
The Second race is the Snake alley Critirium. Many laps up the steepest, most windy street in the US (and you folks in San Fran it is steeper, taller and has more bends than yours!) And on top of that is all 100+ year old paving bricks. I didn't do that race but went up the hill when I got done with the road race. I still had my 12-21 on and I took every bit of strength I had to get up it once at slow speed. My pal had to stop half way up. I way gasping like a fish out of water for the next 5 minutes. Some folks use mountain bikes on this crit.
There are two more crits the next two days, one in Rock Island, IL and one in Mucatine IA.
There is also a big series of races around Milwaukee called superweek. Last year it was July 11-28 (more like 2 1/2 weeks)
Below is a link to a local racing teams website showing the schedule of races for last year.
