| Knockoff Poll: Top Speed You've Attained in the Flats? | Fez Oct 21, 2003 8:51 AM | | I seldom see big descents, so I was wondering how fast in the flats while pedaling. Riding in pack is OK. |

| 60 mph | tarwheel Oct 21, 2003 9:45 AM | | I was drafting behind a semi, on my 10-speed orange Masi -- in the small ring nonetheless! Then a cop pulled over the semi, and that was of my fun. ... Wait a minute. Maybe this was a dream I had. ... No, maybe it was a movie I saw. |

| Depends on way too many factors | Kristin Oct 21, 2003 9:59 AM | | Is it truly flat? Is there a headwind? Tailwind? Group or solo? How long is the measurement??
My personal best time, I feel, was a 22-23MPH solo sprint over 2 miles of truly flat road (not a false flat). That was in my first year of riding. My first year, was my strongest year, since I was riding with racers and pushing myself hard. But I finished that summer with illness and injury as a result. I haven't ridden as much/fast since then, and that's quite all right by me. |
| Simple test | Fez Oct 21, 2003 10:24 AM | | Very simplistic test:
Either be stopped or rolling at a pretty low speed. If you can coast down it and increase your speed, its definitely too hilly. If you find yourself coasting for a long time, its also probably too hilly.
If you don't pick up speed and/or slow down, its flat enough.
Its not an exact science, and the winds are another factor, so I just use the coast test. |
