| A few pictures from the Dead Valley Double... | Bruno S Oct 20, 2003 7:15 PM | | This challenging double was held last Saturday, October 18. 150 riders registered for the Double and another 150 for the Century. I don't know yet how many finished but I was not one of them. The temperature reached 100+ F in the afternoon. After riding for a couple of hours on those conditions I had to quit due to cramps and dehydratation. My total milage was 132 with an elevation gain of about 8000 feet. I had enough. |

| Heat and sun 1, Parched cyclist 0... | rwbadley Oct 21, 2003 6:14 AM | | Not having done this ride myself, I am impressed you made the double metric. Camelback can help sometimes on a route like this. Fill it and keep sucking. We underestimate our needs, and dehydrate from the inside out breathing all that 5% humid air.

| Beat my March ride by 2 miles . . . | ms Oct 21, 2003 5:55 AM | | I tried the DVD in March, realized that I was not going to make 200 miles and turned around at Scotty's Castle (lunch stop on the northern route taken in the Spring). My total miles: 130. I was disappointed, but I could at least claim that I did a double METRIC century. Death Valley is an awesome place in which to ride and I enjoyed your pictures. I drove the southern route when I was in Death Valley in March and hope to do the fall ride over the southern route next year.
Congratulations on a double metric century; 132 miles in Death Valley is no mean feat. And, thanks for the pictures. |
