the thumb button is fine, and it the derailer will shift fine, but the lever under the brake will stick and I have to push it back. What will solve this?

The first step is always to flush with WD-40 and then TriFlow, or do it in one step with ProLink. If that doesn't work, you either have a broken or dislodged spring.
Check for clean cables alsobimini

If you have to dig into the shifter, Branford bikes has some good details for tearing into the shifter and the campagnolo site has detailed parts diagrams showing exploded views of how the shifters go together.

I've been into the shifters a couple of times to covert 9 speed to 8 speed. It's takes time and can be frustrating but you can do these repairs yourself if you got a mechanical inclination. Branford offers professional repair and rebuild service also.
