I live in melbourne, australia. Every weekday morning at 6am there is a bunch of riders that meet and do what is known as the "north road ride". it is not organised by any club or individuals, just seems to "happen" because it has done for years ?! We follow a 35/36km loop, monday and friday ave 30km.wednesday med pace, say 35km ave and tuesday thursday max out at ave over 40kph. On saturdays a very fast longer loop known as " the hell ride " attracts over 100 riders. Wednesdays regularly attract over 150 riders, tuesdays and thursdays around 100. i love it and it never seases to amaze me how a bunch of strangers can have so much fun so early in the morning and would be interested to hear if there is anything of this magnitude that happens anywhere else in the world. i incorporate the ride into my commute to work so end up riding around 60km. Adding one or two of these mornings a week to my regular weekend long ride has helped my riding enormously.

We've got pretty much the same going here in West Palm Beach, Florida and I know that they also have it as well in Tucson, Arizona.

judging by the lack of response, confirms my suspicion, we have one of the healthiest participation rates in the sport. no wonder the aussies continue to "punch above their weight" in international cycling !

I know of a few rides around in the area, Central California/Bay Area

During the Summers there is a Wed ride that leaves from the bike shop in turlock at 5:30. It's a race paced ride ride that starts as a 40 mile loop and increases to a 55 mile loop as the days get longer. From 20 to 50 riders.

Every Saturday in Monterey CA there is a ride that leaves from one of the downtown hotels. Lots of locals but also a lot of tourist show up.. 60 plus riders.

There are others but I don't know the details.

interesting

perhaps i will take my bike next time i am in the US. A saturday morning on melbournes "beach road" regularly takes over 2000 riders, bunches of all shapes and sizes from 6am all morning. most do a 80-90 km loop to frankston and back.there is always a pack to hang onto if you are feeling lazy or "stir up" if you are feeling strong !
