|Last Friday (8 days ago as I post). I did a one way 60 mile solo ride with a roughly 20 mile/hour head wind the whole way. Afterwards I told friends it was the hardest ride of the year. After the ride I sat for about 20 minutes, when I got up I had the worst cramp of my life. It brought tears to my eyes and I was pretty much a withering mass for about five minutes. It was in my left hip.
Looking in the mirror last night I've got a purple bruise blemish on the back of my left hip about the size of my hand (it's hugh). Nothing hurts and I've ridden twice since and not felt any side effects. My wife is like "hey, should we get you to the emergency room". I feel fine, so I'm not going, but, just wondering, anyone else seen anything like this ?

|but sounds like you ruptured a blood vessel, maybe as a result of the cramp, or you mistook that for a cramp. If I got a bruise, especially the size you describe, and it wasn't caused by an impact, I'd be in the emergency room asap. Whatcha got to lose by going in (versus not going in)?|

|the fact that you're asking for opinions here shows you want to find out what happened. A doc who can examine you is probably more likely to figure that out than anyone here.|
|If I had that, I might go to a doctor. Not the ER though...||NatC|

|especially since it's been over a week and you haven't crumped. Doc would probably tell you to watch it and wait.|

|...and I would recommend going in to get seen, sooner rather than later. Especially given the amount of pain you were having, the bruise may be a sign of more significant injury. It sounds from your description like you may have torn a muscle...
But either way, you should be seen by a doc to evaluate your hip joint and make sure there's nothing more serious going on. That ain't normal. Maybe they'll tell you to watch it, but I would try to get seen soon.

|I'd get seen sooner rather than later. Your PCP should be able to set you straight. In the mean time, you might want to lay off any asprin (especially) just to minimize the bruising issue.

|You tore a muscle. You over did it. The next time you're biking into 20 MPH headwinds.....bail out.
She prescribed 1 aspirin a day for the next 10 days to reduce the chance of developing a dangerous clot (which she dosn't expect based on the examination). She did say that the aspirin may cause additional bleeding, if it's still going on internally, but that the blood was all going the right way (down).
Thanks encouraging me to see the doc.
