|Hey, I was just wondering if anyone here has ever worn out any drive drain parts? You know, like derailleurs or shifters or something like that? I was curious to know whether most people upgrade because of necessity or because of "upgraditus".|

Bottom Bracket: Yes
If you want to see something wear out... put serious miles with climbing and hard race type efforts on any sub-serious components such as Sora, RSX, or Tiagra... you will see the wearability decrease rather dramatically in comparison to 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace. I have no experience with the lower end Campy stuff, but assume the same.

|Interesting is I have always heard about campy shifters wearing out (ergos). I have a 1995 Bianchi Trofeo with Campy stratos derailleurs (read: dirt cheap) and the components are fast approaching 30k without a replacment. The shifters are Athena Ergos with 25K on them. Are they sloppy...a bit now...but still work well enough for my beater and why not keep beating!
I have many other campy parts that have tons of miles and I only note replacing pulleys on occasion, lots of cassettes and chains. I do enjoy taking the old campy at rock bottom dollars from the upgrade crews out there!

|I guess that expression is not entirely true, but if you do a lot of climbing or mashing, you will wear anything out. I agree the lower end stuff will wear quicker for either Shimano or Campy, but since I started using the Record and Chorus group stuff (Ti cassettes excluded), I can't seem to put much wear on them, even the fragile 10 spd chain. But I do take very good care of my group and never let them run out of synch.|

|And once again, somewhat agree but like you...I know everything will wear out. The rear derailleur on that Trofeo is permanently fixed where it is...if I were to change gear ranges...it would object! haha. I ride in a very hilly area and I believe this is why i wear through the cassettes and chains. I have also learned the fine art of filing the teeth burrs and working the cassettes for every last mile.
Then you take them off, throw on a new one and make a windchime!

|at a high cadence rather than mashing will do wonders as far as drivetrain longevity is concerned regardless of whether you ride flats or hills. I usually get 6000 miles out of my chains before I start to see stretch and I've never had to replace a cassette or chainrings on any of my road bikes, ever. Stuff still wears, but very, very slooooooooooowly. Dura Ace STI's last forever unless you constantly bang them against walls, etc. Tires of course wear out. Hubs and brake calipers can last eons with proper maintenance. Carbon steerer forks probably should be inspected every year and if you are a big rider should be replaced every three to four years. Same with handlebars and seatposts. Most saddles get more comfortable with use. Frames that are not crashed last longer than most of us wish to ride them. (Though I wonder about some of the ultra light aluminum ones.)
Basically the way you ride, as well as how big you are, has a lot to do with how your equipment lasts. And taking good care of your equipment mechanically also helps of course.

|Forgot to mention, the Campy steel cassette (Chorus) will definitely wear longer than the Ti/Steel, or the very expensive Ti. Stick with the all steel Chorus and you will get 5,000 + miles with good maintenance.|| |
