|Browsing around the Shimano website, I noticed they have triple-specific front and rear deraileurs. It makes sense to me that the front would be different for a triple than for a double, but why the rear?|

|Shimano calls it capacity, most people call it chain wrap. The rear derailleur needs a longer cage to take up more chain slack caused be the extreme differences in the size of the chain rings and the difference in the size of the cassette cogs.
