|Started road riding last year, and just got my first flat at 3,000 miles. Sounds good. Too bad it was a piece of glass that went through my fairly new vredestein fortezza tri-comps! Got the glass out, repaired the flat, but prior to today's ride, I noticed the tube was coming out through the tire, where there is an approximately 5 mm defect in the center of the tire, not the sidewall. Placed a patch on the inside of the tire, so I could do my ride, but I wonder: is there a way to address this, fix it, or is the tire toast, and should I just order a new tire from bike tires direct where they came from?

|If the tube comes out the tire, that's not a good thing. You can "boot" it in an emergency to get you home, but that thing is toast.|

|The odds are good that even with a boot, the tire will bulge somewhat at the cut. As a result, it will wear very fast right there. So, boot it with a large double layer of Tyvek (the white "paper" used in FedEx envelopes) and then keep an eye on it and replace when the rubber wears off the boot point.|

|To "boot" a tire means to put a thin layer of something tough on the inside to prevent the tube from extruding through a tear or cut in the casing. While you can buy tire boot material, you can also use a cut out piece of a sidewall of a tire, a tire patch, or the Tyvek I suggested. You cut your boot big enough to way more than cover the cut area, and then hold it in place with a bit of tire glue. You don't really need the glue with the Tyvek, because it will stay in place pretty well, being so thin. Thinner boots are better, which is why the double layer Tyvek works well. As an emergency boot, paper currency is very tough and works quite well also. For my on-bike emergency kit, I carry a piece of Tyvek along with my spare tube and Park instant patches.|

|I also carry tyvek, and tires that I've booted with it have lasted a long time. I don't think your reccomendation of paper money is nearly as good, though. Plastic energy bar wrappers are tougher and more prevalent.|

|I had really new (third ride) Hutchinsons this summer and they were cut up. I was unhappy and tried super-gluing the cut from the front and booting from the inside (Tyvek covered with duct tape). It didn't last long before the bulging tube came through.
Enjoy your new tire. Although, 3K miles w/o flatting isn't too bad of odds.
