|I've seen knock-off bikes. A fellow recently was selling imitation Specialized and GT bikes from Asia. He claimed that he was getting them direct from the official factory, but it was obvious that they were not the real thing. I called him on it, and he removed them from his website saying that it was a "mistake."
I've also seen fake Colnagos. These were plain lugged, steel frames with Colnago decals stuck on them. Not too creative. I haven't seen any copies of current model Colnagos, but I wouldn't doubt that someone is doing it.

|Most major manufacturers (including Colnago) have some things contract-built in places other than Italy. Often, these factories produce very similar frames with a different brand name. With Colnago, it is usually apparent, because their geometry is a little unique, but others are less clear.
It's highly likely that you could buy a near-identical frame with a no-name brand.

|... I've heard of NYC riders doing tricks like removing the decals from a Colnago and replacing them with Huffy decals.
In principle, that might give some protection against bike theives, except any bike thief who appreciated the difference between a Colnago and a Huffy could probably also identify the difference at a glance.
