It must be the beer and waffles. We all no the great exploits of Eddy Merckx's mid-section during retirment, but wow, look at Johan Bruyneel now! That man is expanding faster than the ozone hole over Antartica! Of course, maybe it has to do witht he fact that he is standing behind little Roberto, but wow, me thinks Johan isn't getting much exercise anymore! Compare him in this picture with those of just two years ago...

I think it's because most European pros don't ride bikes for fitness (hence the past widespread if not continuing drug usage) but because it's a sport. They are exceedingly lean during their athletic careers because this makes you faster. When they are done racing there is no longer any reason to be thin. I've seen ex-pros smoking as well.
