Bay Area Cyclists...What are some of your favorite rides?robdob

I'm new to road cycling as well as this board.

I live in the Bay Area and would like to know what is one or two of your favorite rides.

Looking for all levels and lenghts. Also, advise any cycling clubs or web-links (listing rides, maps, etc..) to check out?

Thanks for your help.

S.F, East Bay, Marin, and Contra Costa County to start.

Wine country rides would be great as well.

Ok. One ride would be to start in San Francisco and ride up the Presidio hill, across the Golden Gate Bridge and then up to the top up Mt. Tamalpais and back. I believe it is about 45 miles with 2500 feet of elevation or so... It is a very cool ride.

Do a search here for directions on it.

Peace.

Chalk Hill>Alexander Valley>Healdsburg>Westside Rd. is a nice rolling loop. If you're up for somew big climbs King Ridge (from Monte Rio) Coleman Valley (from Santa rosa) or The Geysers loop (from Geyserville) are all classic rides.

Check the Almaden Cycle Touring Club. It's in Santa Clara County, but also has links to a lot of other area clubs.

The Three Bears: approx 23 miles from Orinda back to Orinda. Beautiful, hills, and flats. Also, Castro Valley to Moraga and back on Redwood Rd.

We have lots of great rides out here, East of the Berkeley hills. Up Mt.Diablo, or along the Delta on Snake Rd, with a trip up McEwen. The Bears near Briones are beautiful, with very little traffic.

There are many clubs

Or go to a bike store and ask them.

You're on the wrong side of the bay, but if you ever make to the other side, there are lots of routes up and over the Santa Cruz Mountains and down to the ocean. The coastline is spectacular, and you usually go through redwood groves to get there.

Down Alpine and Pescadero Road is probably my favorite route. Go over Stage Road and come back Hwy 84 or Tunitas Creek. Or, for a really spectacular ride, head south on Hwy 1. Turn left at Bonny Doon Road and climb your heart out, or go all the way to Santa Cruz and pick up Hwy 9, which will take you through Henry Cowell Redwoods, with a little less intense climbing to get back.

Plus there are tons of great dirt/road loops you can do on a cross bike or mtb from SF around Mt. Tam.

Keith's Deluxe Interactive Map Builder.

Available here, I believe:

http://www.gnu.org/directory/Hobbies/sports/KLIMB.html

Allows you to build maps that show profiles and elevation gains. You need to download each region separately.

The Bay Area has some great riding, especially if you like to ride long distance.

Krebs Cycling Products makes excellent maps. You can find them in just about any bike store. Get one and go exploring.
