Shifters: Ultegra vs Dura Ace(6 posts)

Shifters: Ultegra vs Dura Acermlee
Sep 27, 2003 7:23 PM
My Ultegra shifters are starting to wear out (there a lot of play in the inside lever of the right shifter) and I'm going to need to replace them soon. I'm considering both Ultegra and Dura Ace shifters, and was wondering if the Dura Ace shifters are actually worth the extra $50 it'll cost me. Any thoughts?

DA shifters have a crisper and more solid feel in my opinion. They also seem to rattle less over bumps in the road. Function is about equal but feel and durability should be better with DA.

I have bikes with both DA & Ultegra shifters. The DA shifters are far better and the one thing I would like to change on my Ultegra bike. DA shifters have shorter lever action and crisper shifting. I would imagine that they are built to last longer as well.

$60 plus shipping from ICYCLEusa.com. After 12k miles, my right Ultegra was getting a little flimsy. I bought a right shifter and some new DA derailleurs and a chain and it shifts like a new drivetrain. Since DA upgraded to 10 speed I suspect that 9speed DA will be readily available next summer for a steal. I doubt that your left shifter is worn out, probably scuffed a little. I also replaced the rubber hood on the left shifter.

I have DA triple on one bike and Ultegra triple on two others. I agree that in the triple model, the DA shifters are crisper and quieter than Ultegra. The Ultegras have been bullet proof, but the DA's are just that much better.

If you have a triple, the Dura Ace has a trim setting for the big ring. The Ultegra doesn't have it and it is needed.
