Durham, NC cycling info?asphalt assault
Sep 26, 2003 5:03 AM
It looks like I'l be holed up in a hotel at 40 and 55 in Durham for a few weeks starting Oct 21. Like any devoted cyclist I'l be bringing the road bike and possably an MTB as well.

Just wondering what the cycling scene is like down there. Can anyone direct me to some good rides near where I'm staying for during the week? Are there any centuries happening on the weekends of 10-25 or 11-1...or any other road/MTB events for me to consider?

I'l be looking for some ride companions for anyone who would like to show a yankee some local rides. nmgf99

You will be about 5 min from me. Drop me a line richardr at triathlete dot com and let me know what you are looking for.

Although you may want to reconsider as we are the latest target of the Clear Channel anti-cycling campaign.

if you don't mind a short drive to Chapel Hill/Carrboro there aer a bunch of group road rides on the weekends leaving from various spots.

10am saturday: Performance ride, weekly hammerfest, meets at the Performance bike shop on Main St. in Carrboro

9am sat & sun: Tricyclists BRC group rides, more moderate pace than the Performance ride, contact Kathleen Gleason for info gleason AT mindspring DOT com

in Cary there are also shop rides out of the Spin Cycle and Cycling Spoken Here. give a call over to the shops to find out more info.

there are some decent mtb trails in the area (Chapel Hill High School trails, New Light, Rocky Road), as someone else said check on

My parents live in Cary and I'm going to spend about 10 days in NC around Thanksgiving, are clubs riding that time of year? I live in San Diego, so the temp doesn't get below 56 during the day. What cold weather gear is typically worn that time of year?

Also, could you suggest some routes?

Here are links to the two most active bike clubs in the Triangle. Tarwheels is more Chapel Hill/Durham based and NCBike is more Raleigh, but it's easy to get to rides with either group from where you are staying. Both web sites have calendars listing rides.
