Noisy Open Pro/Dura Ace wheel...PT
Sep 12, 2003 6:22 AM
I have an Open Pro rim laced to a Dura Ace hub that I use on paved and gravel roads and for light trail riding. The front wheel makes a click/rattle once every rotation that's mostly detectable at lower speeds. I cleaned and repacked the hub and that didn't fix the noise, but I didn't really expect it to as I believe the sound emanates from the rim. I have had Mavic mountain rims that had more-or-less the same problem when an internal shim used during welding of the rim "broke loose" after hard use. I fixed that noise problem by dripping Elmer's glue into the rim at the weld through a spoke hole, thus fixing the shim in place. I'd try the same thing with the Open Pro rim but the full eyelets prevent that approach. Does anyone have experience with this type of irritating noise on this rim, and if so have you found a fix?

Mine were fine until I ran over a squirrel this weekend at 45 MPH. I survived but the squirrel - yuk! I think it may have got caught in my rear wheel.

Since then my front started clicking. I checked for loose spokes and out of true but this was okay. Which fix should I try first? oiling the nipples or finding "monkey glue".

It's the rim. It's quite common too. It is clicking at the seam of the rim. Give it time and your rear wheel will do the same too. Some people say you can smack the rim at the seam with a hammer and it will secure it enough to quite it for a while.

From my experience, it can be either the seam weld pin broken loose and rattling or the spoke nipple hole getting contaminated with dirt/junk that causes a creaking noise when nipple is stressed at rim hole interface. I found it by watching where in the revolution the clicking occurred and adding a small oil/lube drop in eyelets. Once I discovered that was problem, I then clean rim with soap and water. A year later, still ok.
