I'm using albuterol as prescribed and I don't think it's doing a thing at all for me. I'm getting very frustrated watching my friends ride away everyday as I struggle to catch my breath.

I use to wake up in the middle of the night to use my inhaler almost everynight until my wife talked me in going to the doc. I had childhood asthma but it got better in my early 20's but has come back in my late 20's (which my doc says is not uncommon). My doc and I tried about 12 different meds and found that going back and forth with advair 50/500 and 250/50 as needed worked the best. I take my peak flow two to three times a day and change the advair to match. I went from a 350-500 L/min to currently a 650-750 L/min and I am 5 foot 8 and about 135 pounds. My doc didn't think I was doing the peak flow right until she did the spirometry (spelling??) in the office and found a 30% increase. I went from riding with freinds to being on a team in one season. It did take a lot of trips to the doc to get it right however. My doc also said I would have been in bad shape had I not been in as good of shape as was.

Advair is great for asthma. I assume since you have a prescription for albuterol that you've been diagnosed with asthma. I started using Advair about a year ago as a replacement for taking Azmacort and Serevent in combination. Albuterol by itself only treats the symptoms of asthma but doesn't prevent it from happening in the first place. A doctor put me on the Azmacort/Serevent combo several years ago and I noticed an immediate improvement in breathing quality. Then last year a pharmacist recommended Advair as being more convenient than taking two separate meds. Advair seems to work better as well. I rarely need albuterol now although I still carry it in my jersey pocket as a just in case thing.

Exactly my doctor describes Advair as maintainance medicine and Albuterol as rescue medicine. In the month of March my allergies give me asthma symptoms.

But I would go to a good asthma doctor and discuss the options with him...

If you're asthmatic and have only used albuterol, you'll be amazed at how effective Advair is. I've been using asthma meds for over 35 years and they've recently gotten really really good (been using Advair since it's been on the market).

If you have an insurance copay, I'd talk to your Dr and go for it.
