Where to ride near Baltimore?(10 posts)

Where to ride near Baltimore?Jeff Rage

I'm having trouble finding places to ride near where I live. I really like the B&A trail and the BWI trail. We also ride around the backroads by rt. 32/rt 144/rt. 97. However, I'm trying to find somewhere closer to my house. I live near where rt. 70 crosses 695. Are there any places to ride near there? Safety is main concern.

I can't help you with routes right around where you live. It sounds like you are hitting the right spots in southern Carroll County, which are the best cycling roads closest to the intersection of I-70 and I-695. If you are willing to do a long ride, or drive a little before you begin your ride, I highly recommend the roads in Northern Baltimore County. There are lots of good routes (albeit on roads without shoulders): roads like Deer Park and Ivy Mill on the east side of the Liberty Resevoir, Butler Road in the Worthington Valley and roads that go north from it (if you like to climb, go north on Piney Grove). If you want a nice ride without too many cars, ride around the Prettyboy Resevoir. If you are planning to ride from where you live to Baltimore County, Marriottsville Road to Wards Chapel Road or going through Carroll County to Deer Park Road to cross the Liberty Resevoir are the best ways to get there.

Joes Bike Shop (Mt Washington)
Race Pace (Ellicott City)

These guys have been riding around here for years and know the best routes. Race pace is pretty close to you.

Race Pace doesn't have group rides anymore. I am planning to join the BBC.

I've been in the club for a couple years and now race for their team. Tons of rides every weekend, but you'll usually have to drive. Check out baltobikeclub.org and BBCracing.org for info--both sites have info on rides and cue sheets.

I hate having to drive so far to ride my bike. And the days are getting shorter. So, I was hoping to find someplace closer.

I ride alot on the back roads in and around Ellicott City, Elkridge (home) and Catonsville. Several cool old roads to ride in EC, with some decent hills (Ilchester Road).
Oh yeah ...Jeff Rage

We've done that a couple of times. Started out on Landing Road. Made out way thru historical Ellicott City, went all over the place & ended back at Landing Road.
Ilchester rocks!! (nm)BIGBOB
