Is the 3T Less and 3T Zepp the same stem?(8 posts)

Is the 3T Less and 3T Zepp the same stem?Fez

I need to replace a 1 year old Zepp stem.

I rarely see the Zepp in retail stores anymore, but I do see the Less quite often.

The Less seems comparable in weight and price. The shape is even similar. Are they the same stem?

OK, I see it. Is it a real carbon faceplate or carbon "look"?Fez

No description given in my catalog.
Supergo's description sheds a little light...biknben

From Supergo:
CNC'd & butted 2030-T6 alloy stem with a unique carbon fiber faceplate that evenly distributes tightening torque. 31.8mm bar diameter, 1-1/8" steerer diameter (also fits 1" w/included shim). 80/100º reversible.

A carbon "look" isn't going to alter load distribution so I think it's safe to say it's legit.
It's legit. CF faceplate.KG 361

Got one a few months ago. Works well, looks good. Couldn't beat the price.

I was just reading on Jensons web site that the Less stems bar clamp diameter is a "standard" 26mm where the Zepp is for OS (oversize) 31.8 bars. Did the Zepp come in a standard bar version as well?

Jenson has the Zepp OS stems in 100 and 120mm for $57.
I have a small diamter Zepp...biknben

I have no idea why they did this renaming thing. At one point they had a Zepp and the Zepp XL. Now they have the Less, which is the smaller diameter Zepp w/ carbon faceplate. The Zepp OS seems the same as the XL.

The Zepp comes in both a 26.0 and 31.8 diameter. You'll know by looking at the Zepp logo on the side. If it doesn't say 'XL', then it's a 26.0 diameter. I may be wrong but I believe the Less replaced the Zepp this year with the only difference being the carbon face plate.

On another note, check with your LBS to see if they have any Zepps. I was able to get mine from Gregg's Greenlake Cycle here in Seattle for $39. The stem was originally spec'd as standard equipment on a bike but the length was wrong for a customer so they swapped it. It didn't have the topcap but I didn't care for that price.
