When I used to race there were always the guys who seemed to crash in every race, guys who managed to crash on solo training rides, etc. But it seems like most pros just don't crash all the frequently. What's up with Tyler?
Alex Zulle crashes (ed?) more-but he is (was) legally blind (nm)TJeanloz

Does Tyler do BETTER because of his crashes? . . .ms

In the latest Cycle Sport, Jonathan Vaughters writes that he does not think that Tyler Hamilton's crash in the Tour had an impact on his overall standing -- that is that he would not have done any better had he not crashed. Vaughters' comment raised the question with me: Does Tyler do better when he crashes? Second in the 2002 Giro and fourth in this year's Tour. Now I know that he had a great Spring without injuries, but I am beginning to wonder whether he needs pain to push himself that extra bit in the grand tours.
NO? . . .pedalruns

At least I don't think so..

In the 02 Giro, he crashed mid to late race. (mechanical faliure, resulting in a horrific looking crash) He had already done a time trial and won I think... after his crash he couldn't stay with Salvadolo(sp?) all the way on one last climb, where Evans completely cracked.. and in the final time trial on the last day he actually lost time to Salvadolo.... Which I think a Tyler that hadn't been hurled into the ground, would have been able to keep up on the climbs and most certianly have gained time in the time trial, which is is specality.. So his 2nd place could have easily been first without his shoulder blade break.. IMO...

In the TDF this year... I don't know where Vaughters comes from... A guy that never even finished a grand tour?... Think of how much energy TH used in that first week, just trying to finish the stages... The Alp de Huez he did really well, but he started to pay for that first week and his first time trial sucked and he started falling back on the climbs.. Look how strong he was in the end time trial, and not to mention that long stage win....after the shoulder had a little more time to heal..

But crashes seem to follow him... Last year after the tour he was warming up for a race and someone opened a car door and wham!! It does seem to be one crash after another for him..

My long 5 cents.

We'll see next summer, she'll come out for training and still kick a$$ around here.
