|The advert reads "Eddy Merckx Leader MX", so I get all excited...
I go to see the frame, and whilst the frame has a "Leader MX" decal on the top tube near the head tube, the frame is lugless! Further, the Columbus sticker reads "Altec"...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't a Leader MX be MXL tubing with lugs?
So, what Merckx frame is it?!?! I have googled until I was blue in my two typing fingers, and couldn't find it!

|You ae correct about what the MX leader was supposed to be: lugged Columbus Max tubing I am not aware of any lugless steel merckx. Altec is Aluminum. It's not one I am familiar with. Gita has been the importer for years,so maybe they could help.|

|Merckx dropped steel frames from it's line in 2001(later in the year, but still in 2001) and now the Leader frame is an aluminium frame. If I am right about this one, if the frame you are looking at has an Altec decal, it is a 2001 or 2002 frame. In 2003 they switched over to Easton tubing so it is now an Easton Ultralight frame. They may have made that switch last year, but I know the 2003 frames are Easton, not Columbus. But as far as I know, the decals on these frames also read simply Leader. There shouldn't be an MX after it. However it is possible that the 2001 Columbus frames were still badged Leader MX.
Now, to add to the confusion, Merckx has re-issued some "MX Leader" frames in steel, but they are only available in the Molteni paint scheme and they are Columbus Max frames. Gita has a few of these frames still, but they only have 57 cm to 63 cm frames left. The Merckx website in Belgium does not list these bikes, they are only on the Gita (the US distributor) website.
That doesn't exactly answer your question, but it should narrow it down some.

|I read somewhere that the Merckx factory has a lot of MX Leader (the lugged steel, MAX tubes) frames in their wharehouse, unpainted, unsold. I think an English company bought some and were selling a retro-Molteni MX leader (maybe GITA was selling them also as mentioned?). Maybe you could get them to paint for one for you as you wish. If you have any luck, please post.|

|I can call my Gita rep and look into this... if they started to do retro re-issue paint jobs, I would get a Motorola and 7-11 frame! Maybe a 1997 Telekom paint scheme! If they were smart enough to sell them with box crown steel forks.... that would rock!
I work at a place that used to sell DeRosa's and one of the things we heard a lot of was that if DeRosa sold the Neo Primato with a box crown chromed fork, more people would have bought it.
By the way, Merckxman, Gita Sports is the US distributor for Merckx frames. And like I said in an above post, they only have bigger sizes right now, but they made mention that they could get smaller ones....
