I'm a mountain biker looking for some time on a road bike. I have a very limited budget and I don't need a very nice bike, just something funtional. I realize the perils that come from buying a used bike, but I recognize them.
I just can't seem to find, other than at WalMart, a used bike in the 300-500 range. None of the classifieds here are for low end bikes. Does anyone know about "bike swaps" or how to find them? I know I should be able to avoid a huffy, but I can't find the bikes.

|they advertise on this site and offer a road bike for $400. Doesn't look too bad.

|Do you want indexed shifting? Brifters, where the shifting is consolidated into the brake levers? Do you care much about bike weight? Do you know what size of bike you need?
If you'll ride a 25-30 lb bike with friction shifters, you should be able to find something from the 80's in very good condition on Ebay for less than $200 delivered to your door. A lot of these bikes have less than 1000 miles on them. Schwinn, Miyata, Nishiki, Fuji are good 80's brands.
If you want a new bike with STI, there's several good choices for 23 to 25 lb Shimano Sora equipped road bikes about $500 to $600. I think it's almost hard to find a bad new road bike now. A $500 bike now is better than anything that existed when I started riding roadbikes in the early 70's.

|I have bought a low end Trek and a Giant Prodigy for less than $50 each at garage sales. (tough to find but great deals if you are lucky and patient)
Many pawn shops carry bikes
Some Local Bike Shops sell used trade-ins. (I saw a 2 year old Lemond Zurich in a local LBS for $795, but it was too small for me)
Great deals can be had on ebay.
Some of the web / mail order house have good new bikes for less than $1000.
