I was perusing some bike catalogs yesterday and came upon two makes that made my jaw drop. Here they are. What are your votes?

That Land Cruiser looks pretty sweet.

Is it yours? Give some more details on it.
The Toyota or the Ellsworth?the bull

The Toyota is really a Ford escort that I put the crusier body on and the Ellsworth is a Schwinn from Walmart! :)

Give me a little time.
I was not sure if you were like "sweet Truth BTW nice cruiser"!
Yeah the bike is nice, too, but...Fez
Aug 26, 2003 12:12 PM
If you have the dough, you could go out today and build yourself a pretty sweet Ellsworth Truth.

An old Land Cruiser like that is a bit more challenging to find, especially one that's in good shape.

What kind of engine? Inline 6?

What kind of 4wd system? Permanent 4wd? Can you lock any of the differentials?

Are you going to restore the interior? How easy is it to get old Land Cruiser parts these days?

That is a nice vehicle. Keep us posted how the restoration goes. Its funny how big and plush Land Cruisers have become since then.

6 cyl F motor.
It is pretty much a 250 Chevy motor.
It has a 3 speed manual trans with a 4 high and low.
These diffs dont lock and when you want to put in 4 wheel drive you have to shift it in to 4 high or low out of 2 low
and then then lock the frt hubs into the frt shaft at the wheel.
I will probally get it running and go from there.
I want to use it to carry my dogs and go camping etc.
I hardly drive it even when it runs.
It is easy to get parts.
A company called Spector has every thing you will ever need.

Want a more recent one? I have a 1987 FJ-60 w/ 3.8l 6cyl diesel and 5spd manual tranny. 412000km, and still running as strong as new.

I need something larger for my work as a carpenter/timber framer, so a 2004 F-350 Diesel is on order.
This is how it startedAtombomber

Looked good new.
What country are you in?Fez
Aug 27, 2003 4:57 AM
I don't recall U.S. ever getting the diesels.

That body style looks like a cyclist's dream. Looks like the cargo area could handle a few bikes mounted upright, and possibly without even taking the front wheel off.

I'd probably get the windows tinted if I did that.
CanadaAtombomber
Aug 27, 2003 7:17 AM
I did have the tint film put on all of the windows behind the front doors. I generally carry my bikes inside if I'm driving solo, but I have 5 fork down roof carriers and a 3 bike hitch slide-in carrier, and a 2 bike front bumper carrier. I have maxed out that system only once on a shuttle in Moab. I did fit everyone inside, but 4 squeezed in tight in the dog box.

I remove the front wheels when I put my bikes inside (unless its just 1 bike, where I just lay it down). I made a fork down thingy so that I can securely transport the bikes inside, bit of wood and some old hubs.

Can someone tell me who painted this bike?Kristin
Aug 26, 2003 12:01 PM
This was up for auction on Ebay last year. It is a special edition that was suposed to be presented to Lance at the Tour. (I'm not sure if it was or not.) Anyway, I can't remember who painted it. Its not my bike though. If I recall the winning bidder paid over ten grand for it.

Aug 27, 2003 6:26 AM
Lucky? You don't know how lucky. I bought the frame (that fits me) used from some guy on the internet for about 1/3 list. Put the whole thing together with new Ultegra build kit (GHV bikes) for less than a Specialized. I race it in crits, and call Richard Schwinn every couple of years for some more touch up paint.
Damn straightSao
Aug 27, 2003 9:10 AM
How old is the frame? Also, do you see a lot of them in crits? I can't say I see many of them in races, although I've seen bike messengers riding around on them which seems odd.

Dang, you're making me want to spend a whole bunch of money VERY soon!! There's just a certain something about the Waterford. Like I said in my posts....someday...

Great bike. Thanks.
Damn straight53T
Aug 27, 2003 10:16 AM
The frame was manufactured in 1996, I got it in 1998. No I have never seen another one in a crit, but the geometry is fine for crits (although it is targeted at road racing), the speedplays compensate for any lowness of the BB that the bike may have. I've never seen a messanger on one, but they all seem to know what it is.

There are many bikes as nice as the Waterford, some comparably priced. The heritage, however, is unmatched in the U.S.
